The Coralville, Iowa, community is mourning the deaths of Hannah Jorgensen, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary School, and Ahmed Osman, a 10-year-old fifth-grade student, following a tragic incident during a school field trip.

The two died after an incident in the water at MacBride Nature Recreation Area, near the Coralville Reservoir spillway, earlier this week.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the area around noon Tuesday after receiving reports that two people were in the water.

An extensive search and rescue operation followed, with emergency crews working in and around the reservoir.

Hannah Jorgensen and Ahmed Osman Identified

Authorities later confirmed that Jorgensen, 24, and Ahmed, 10, were the two people involved in the incident.

Jorgensen’s body was recovered on Tuesday. Search crews located Ahmed’s body the following day.

The circumstances that led to the incident have not been fully disclosed. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate what happened.

Borlaug Elementary School Community Mourns

Jorgensen was a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary and had become part of the school community through her work with students.

Her death has deeply affected fellow teachers, students and families within the Iowa City Community School District.

Ahmed was also a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary. His death has left classmates, friends, teachers and loved ones grieving.

The loss of both a teacher and student has brought particular sadness to the school community.

The Iowa City Community School District expressed its condolences following the deaths of Jorgensen and Ahmed.

The district said both were deeply valued members of its community and acknowledged the grief being felt at Borlaug Elementary and throughout the wider district.

William Blackburn Cahill, a former University of Washington football standout who later played defensive back for the Buffalo Bills, has died at the age of 75.

News of Cahill’s passing was announced on September 25, 2026, bringing remembrance from the Washington Huskies community and those who knew him during his football and professional careers.

Cahill was born May 5, 1951, in Bellevue, Washington, and spent his early years in the Seattle-area community. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1969 before continuing his education and football career at the University of Washington.

Cahill played for the Washington Huskies under head coach Jim Owens, developing into a dependable member of the team’s secondary.

His performances earned him Second-team All-Pac-8 honors in 1970.

By his senior season in 1972, Cahill had also taken on a leadership role within the team. He served as co-captain alongside quarterback Sonny Sixkiller, adding to his legacy at Washington.

His college career ultimately opened the door to professional football.

From the Huskies to the NFL

Cahill was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the seventh round of the 1973 NFL Draft, going 158th overall.

He ultimately spent his NFL playing career with the Buffalo Bills, appearing during the 1973 and 1974 seasons.

Cahill played in 19 NFL games, contributing largely on special teams.

Although his professional career lasted only two seasons, reaching the NFL represented another major milestone following his successful years with the Huskies.

Career With Boeing

After football, Cahill returned to the Seattle area and began a long professional career with Boeing, working in production management.

His life after the NFL extended far beyond the football field. He was remembered for his dependable approach to work and remained connected to the community where he had grown up.

His connection with the University of Washington also remained part of the legacy he left behind.

Karley Diane Slaymaker, 33, of Mona, Utah, died on September 19, 2026, leaving behind two sons, a loving family, and many people who will remember her for her humor, kindness, and unmistakable personality.

Karley was known as a free spirit who lived life in her own way. Family and friends remembered her for the laughter she brought into everyday moments and for the warmth that made people around her feel comfortable.

A Life Centered on Caring for Others

Karley found meaning through her work in health care, where she had the opportunity to care for others. She also worked alongside her father in the beverage industry, experiences that gave them time together and created memories her family will continue to cherish.

Her greatest role, however, was being a mother. Her sons, Brantley and Houston, were at the heart of her life. The love she had for them remains one of the most important parts of the legacy she leaves behind.

Karley is survived by Brantley and Houston; her sister, Adrie (Brett) McCausland; step-sister, Kam (Neil) Oldham; step-brother, Cole (Courtney) Jackman; and her parents, Clay (Kerrie) Slaymaker and Jennie (Jeff) McGarry. She also leaves behind extended relatives and friends who cared deeply for her.

She was preceded in death by her older sister, Jenay Cannon; step-brother, Trason “Hoss” Jackman; grandparents Ted and Sheila Cross; and uncle Austin Moos.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Karley’s life on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mona Municipal Center, 20 W. Center St., Mona, Utah 84645.
