Joyce Baardman, a longtime Manitoba resident known for her strong faith, love of adventure and commitment to serving others, died peacefully on September 19, 2026, at Riverview Health Centre. She was 72.
Her obituary was published in the Winnipeg Free Press on September 24.
A Life Filled With Adventure
Joyce spent her professional career working as a laboratory technologist for the Government of Manitoba. Away from work, she enjoyed staying active and exploring new places.
Her travels took her throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and Europe. In her younger years, she backpacked across Europe, beginning what would become a lifelong love of travel and adventure.
She also enjoyed camping, walking, gardening and quilt-making. Joyce embraced new experiences, including zip-lining and parasailing, and often encouraged those around her to stay active with her familiar words: “just keep moving.”
Faith and Service to Others
Joyce’s faith played an important role in her life. She was a member of Gateway Church and devoted thousands of hours to volunteer work in her community.
Her service included helping newcomers learn English, assisting in classrooms at the King’s School and teaching at the Chai Immigrant Centre. She also served on the centre’s board.
Through those efforts, Joyce became known for giving her time to help and encourage others.
Family and Funeral Service
Joyce is survived by her stepmother, Alyce Baardman; brothers Philip and Sam (Susan Israel); niece Rosalyn Dennett (Rob McLaren) and their children, Roberta and Lionel; and nephew Isaac Dennett (Rae Dennett) and his family, including Levi and Taylor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gysberta and Filippus Baardman, and her brother John.
A funeral service celebrating Joyce’s life is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Gateway Church, 745 Kapelus Dr., West St. Paul. A light lunch will follow the service.
Joyce will be remembered for her compassion, faith, generosity and adventurous spirit. Her family, friends and the many people she supported through her volunteer work will continue to carry her memory forward.
