Another witness, Abby Zuñiga, said she felt a strong vibration inside her home and initially believed it was thunder. She later discovered that a major crash had occurred nearby and went outside to assist.

The severity of the wreck prompted nearby motorists and residents to move toward the damaged truck before emergency personnel arrived.

Hawkins and another person reportedly used pocket knives to help free Shivers from the wreckage while others assisted the injured passenger.
