Angela Johnson, 47, and her son, DeAngelo Johnson, 27, died after a shooting inside a home in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. Police are investigating the incident as a double homicide, while Angela Johnson’s boyfriend has been taken into custody.
The shooting was reported at about 10:43 p.m. in the 800 block of North Parkside Avenue. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire from the basement before emergency services were called.
When Chicago police officers arrived, they found both Angela and DeAngelo suffering from gunshot wounds.
Angela and DeAngelo Johnson Found Inside Home
Angela Johnson was found in the basement with a gunshot wound to her chest. DeAngelo was located on the first floor with multiple gunshot wounds, including wounds to his back, according to police-radio traffic.
Both victims were initially unresponsive. Emergency personnel performed CPR on DeAngelo before he and Angela were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Both were later pronounced dead, with police-radio traffic indicating that the deaths were recorded minutes apart.
Police Recover Firearms and Shell Casings
Investigators recovered numerous shell casings from inside the residence.
Approximately 23 casings were reportedly found in a basement bedroom, while additional casings were located elsewhere in the basement, including near the stairway, main room and another bedroom.
Officers also recovered a firearm from the basement bedroom and later located a second firearm inside the home.
Authorities have not publicly established who owned the weapons or confirmed which firearm was used in the shooting.
Police-radio traffic also indicated that DeAngelo was wearing an empty holster when officers found him on the first floor. That prompted an officer-safety alert as officers searched the residence for another firearm.
Boyfriend Taken Into Custody
Chicago police described the incident as appearing to be domestic-related and identified Angela Johnson’s boyfriend as the alleged offender.
A person had reportedly been detained by approximately 11:26 p.m., and the official police report later confirmed that the known offender was taken into custody.
Two witnesses were reportedly available to identify the alleged offender, and officers conducted a show-up identification near the scene.
Authorities have not released additional information about potential charges against the person in custody.
Investigation Continues
Detectives are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the relationship between the people involved and the evidence recovered inside the home.
The role of the two firearms and the events leading up to the shooting remain part of the investigation.
As police work to establish the full sequence of events, the deaths of Angela and DeAngelo Johnson have left their family and others in the community grieving.
